The river lapwing is a lapwing species which breeds from the Indian subcontinent eastwards to Southeast Asia.River Lapwing is one of South and Southeast Asia’s most distinctive shorebirds.

Habitat

The River Lapwing (Vanellus duvaucelii) is strongly associated with large freshwater rivers and their natural riverbanks.t is rarely found far from water and shows a clear preference for open, unvegetated riverbanks and islands where it can forage and nest with good visibility.

Food

Mainly feeds on small invertebrates that it finds along sandy and gravelly riverbanks. It walks slowly across exposed ground and uses its bill to pick up prey. They hunt by sight, walking briskly across open sandbars or muddy banks, stopping suddenly to peck or probe the ground when they spot movement.

Distribution

The River Lapwing is largely sedentary and occurs from the northern and northeastern Indian subcontinent (India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh) eastward through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and southern China (Yunnan). The species is closely tied to natural rivers with sandy, gravelly, or rocky banks. Its distribution can therefore be patchy, and populations may be affected by changes in river flow, habitat degradation, sand extraction, and human disturbance.

Conservation Status

The River Lapwing is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2024).Protecting natural riverbanks, sandbars, river islands, and breeding areas is important for the long-term survival of the River Lapwing.
